The Many Ways to Keep Your Home Smelling Fresh and Amazing

A home free of unappealing odors can give the impression of a cleaner house and healthy indoor air quality. Aside from lighting some candles, here are some ways to keep your home at its best!

Often, the first impression of a home is based on the visual elements: what makes a home look beautiful, elegant, clean, and organized. Then, another sense takes over, and that’s our sense of smell. The aroma in our homes can have a huge impact on how we feel in our living space, and it can affect the perceptions of those who come to visit. A fresh and pleasant smelling home sets a positive tone. A home free of unappealing odors can give the impression of a cleaner house and healthy indoor air quality. Aside from lighting some candles, here are some ways to keep your home at its best!

Clean Carpets

As much as we love carpets and rugs for how cozy and comfy they are, carpeting traps odor that hard flooring doesn’t. Regular vacuuming won’t be enough to clean and deodorize your carpets and rugs. For those who don’t own or can’t find a place to rent a carpet cleaning machine, you can let some baking soda sit over your carpet flooring for a few hours to draw out stubborn smells before vacuuming it up. There are also store bought powdered products that work the same way.

Clean the Garbage Disposal

The kitchen can be a source of both wonderful, delicious smells and some stronger less favorable odors you’ll encounter in a home. In a modern kitchen, the garbage disposal tends to stink because of all the food scraps we grind up in the appliance. Bacteria can grow in the dark recesses, which produces those unpleasant odors. An easy way to freshen up the disposal is to cut up small pieces of citrus rinds and run those through the disposal with plenty of cold water. Ice with a little soap and plenty of water will also work. If you don’t already have one in place, add a powerful hood fan that can be turned on to help eliminate odors while cooking and during meal prep.

Hide the Trash Can

If your trash can is simply sitting out somewhere in your kitchen, it’s best to get one with a cover to trap the smells inside. Go one step further by hiding the trash can altogether in custom kitchen cabinetry. Either way, wherever you keep your trash can, regularly clean the surrounding space with disinfecting agents to kill stench-causing bacteria and remove trash to an outside can often.

Indoor Plants and Flowers

If you’re set on the idea of caring for some houseplants, flowers, or even herb garden, these can also go a long way in freshening up the air and keep your home smelling great. While you do need to keep a considerable number of plants for it to make any significant air-purifying impact, some plants like jasmine, eucalyptus, mint, or gardenia can subtly perk up the scent around your home. Plus, you get to add some pretty plants and flower pots to your interior decor.

Odor Removers

Another useful tool in maintaining fresh and pleasant air quality is adding citrus gel odor absorbers available at most hardware stores. They are perfect for laundry rooms, bathrooms, closets, garages and more. There are also countless products on the market for plug-in air purifiers and freestanding units as well.
