Feel Better Faster with these Comfort Remedies

Feel Better Faster with these Comfort Remedies

Got sick this flu season? Try these easy, at-home comfort remedies.

Try as we may to keep ourselves healthy during flu season, some of us fall ill despite extra vitamin C, supplements, and, most importantly, regular hand washing.  Maybe we didn’t get enough rest between our hectic work and home life during the recent holiday season, or we found ourselves caring for a family member. Regardless, when we get sick, we feel miserable. Fortunately, there are plenty of home remedies to help alleviate symptoms and provide comfort. Whether you or a loved one is feeling low because of the flu or a cold, try the below remedies to soothe your body and spirit. And remember, it’s always best to seek professional medical attention from your doctor or an urgent care clinic if your illness persists. Take care!

Food

Nothing seems appetizing when we’re feeling sick. Even worse, a sore throat or nausea can quite literally make some foods hard to swallow. Still, you must eat healthy foods and get enough nutrients to recover. Chicken noodle soup is a long time sick food staple, but it is delicious any time too! Warm soup is easy on the stomach and feels soothing on a sore throat. Plus, you get plenty of protein from chicken. Other food options include oatmeal, yogurt, eggs, and your favorite fruits and vegetables.

Drink

Hydration is key when sick. Water is always an excellent choice, but there are plenty of beverage options that will also help you feel better soon. Hot herbal tea and ginger tea can soothe a sore throat and warm you right up. Low-sugar sports drinks or coconut water can help replenish electrolytes in our bodies. For an easy way to get some more vitamins and minerals in your system, enjoy a tasty juice or smoothie made from your favorite fruits and veggies! Hold off on the sodas, caffeine, and alcohol while sick.

Rest

Most people feel very fatigued when they’re sick. Take the opportunity to listen to your body and get plenty of rest. Napping is a luxury; many people do not take advantage of it until forced into bed rest. When you’re not sleeping, take the time to enjoy your more sedentary hobbies, like watching movies or reading a book. Keep blankets, tissues, and fluids on hand.

Relax

Body aches typically accompany all the other debilitating symptoms of being sick. A hot shower or bath should help your muscles relax, and the steam can help with any difficulty breathing. If you feel up to it, it’s appropriate to do some light stretching or yoga. You may find the gentle movements also to help alleviate some physical discomfort.
