Irrigation Systems

Irrigation

Find the right irrigation system for you so you can keep your lawn looking pristine.

Maintaining your lawn enhances the curb appeal of your home, and during the summer, keeping your lawn properly watered is a necessity.  Letting your lawn dry up in the heat can lead to a lackluster appearance, and result in permanent damage or loss of your turf.  This can be costly, as seeding or re-sodding the lawn might become necessary. When it comes to proper watering, you have options depending on your needs, budget, and time.  Let’s break down some of the most common considerations when it comes to keeping your lawn healthy.

Do the Job by Hand

Watering by hand is always a great, low-cost solution to keep your lawn or other plants hydrated.  Most folks rely on a hose with a nozzle that allows for control of the water flow. This helps reduce wasted water and cost.  This method does have drawbacks, however, in that it is time consuming and tedious. Attaching a sprinkler to your hose can help, but you must be vigilant about moving it so that your entire lawn and garden receives water.

Drip Irrigation

Drip systems can be a perfect solution for smaller yards and they also work well for gardens.  Delivering a steady supply of 1 to 4 gallons of water per hour to the soil, this is an effective and less aggressive of an approach to watering your lawn and garden, compared to sprinkler systems or even rain.  Drip irrigation is ideal for gardens with sensitive or disease prone plantings.

In-Ground Systems

In-ground sprinkler systems offer the best of both worlds – they can effectively cover an entire yard, with minimal effort on your part.    These systems can be set on a timer so that consistent watering happens on a regular basis, but you’ll need to monitor soil moisture and lawn conditions manually.  Proper annual maintenance, usually at the beginning of the growing season, is suggested as well.

Smart Systems

Making the most effective use of your sprinkler system typically requires some kind of smart integration technology.  Sensor-based systems allow you to measure the moisture levels in your soil in real time, and there are sensors which understand rainfall, too.  The collected data is sent to your controller, which determines how much water the yard needs in the near future. Another option homeowners can opt for is a weather-based system which uses local weather data to control how much water your lawn requires.  Smart technology helps take the guesswork out of when and how much to water.
