Summer Moving Checklist

Columbia Builders Summer Moving Checklist

It’s peak moving season, and if you’re planning to move into a new home, you should keep a summer moving checklist handy to stay organized.

Summer is the time of year when most people choose to move. Why is that? There’s no single explanation for this phenomenon, but there are a few theories. First of all, the fall and winter seasons are chock full of various holidays, and moving house while also trying to manage holiday celebrations can be problematic. Also, families with school-age children tend to move near the beginning of the summer whenever possible in order to minimize any negative effects, especially if they will be moving schools. Moving at the beginning of summer gives kids time to adjust before the new school year, and hopefully, they can even make some friends before school starts. Whatever your reason for moving this summer season, don’t forget to have a summer moving checklist available to help you stay organized.

Professionals or DIY?

The first thing you will need to do is decide whether you want to hire professional movers or do it yourself.

Professional Movers

  • Determine which services you will need.
  • Determine available services from various moving companies.
  • Read reviews for any companies you’re considering.
  • Get quotes from various moving companies.
  • Ask relatives or friends for recommendations.

DIY

  • Enlist any needed help.
  • Obtain packing supplies.
  • Organize your belongings.
  • Determine if you’ll need professional help for large items.
  • Keep a folder for all important documents.

Packing

Professional

If you have a professional moving company do your packing for you, there are some things you should do to make that process easier and faster.

  • Organize your belongings as much as possible.
  • Set aside anything you plan to take with you (including personal or sensitive items).
  • Recycle, donate, or throw away anything you don’t want to take with you before the movers arrive.
  • Keep tabs on any valuable or fragile items—take photos of them from every angle, ask about how they will be packed, and take note of how to file a claim if something arrives damaged or does not arrive at all.

DIY

  • Enlist help if possible.
  • Organize your belongings as much as possible.
  • Set aside anything you plan to take with you (including personal or sensitive items).
  • Recycle, donate, or throw away anything you don’t want to take with you before the movers arrive.
  • Make sure you have enough moving supplies.
  • Consider packing services from professional movers—bin rentals, supply packages, etc.
  • Rent a truck if needed.

Scope Out the New Area

Before you move, scope out the area you’ll be living in.

  • Determine which grocery stores are available, where they’re located, and how far they are from your home.
  • If you have school-aged children, find out where their school is located—take a tour if possible to help them get their bearings.
  • Locate and call nearby doctor’s offices to get your family in as new patients. You should also locate any specialists you need and call them.
  • If you have pets, research local veterinary offices to find the one that suits your needs.
  • Scope out any other facilities that are necessary for you and your family to have access to.
