How Do Energy Efficient Windows Work?

Energy Efficient Windows

Energy efficient windows can help keep your home cool this summer and save you some money on your energy bills!

With the summer heat setting in, many homeowners look for ways to keep their home as cool as possible. Energy efficient products are vital components in every home we build. Every Columbia Builders home is built under the government-sponsored Energy Star Program, thus making us a 100% ENERGY STAR partner. In fact, Columbia Builders is committed to building homes that surpass energy efficiency expectations to make your custom home more comfortable. Our homes are consistently rated more than 25% above Energy Star Standards. Energy efficient windows are one of the building materials and practices we use in your new custom home to save you money and keep your home cool and comfortable throughout the summer. But how exactly do energy efficient windows work? Let’s look at the technologies working behind the scenes!

Glass Coating

Not all glass is created equal. Energy efficient windows utilize low-emissivity, or Low-E, glass. This glass is specially designed to block out 90% of the rays of the sun,  keeping your home cooler during the summer and warmer during the winter. AND this saves you money on your energy bills.

Spacer System

Window systems need insulation as well to lock out the cold air in the winter and the hot air in the summer. Air leakage negatively impacts your energy costs, which is why it’s important to insulate windows properly. In the past, metal was often the insulator of choice, while today, most energy efficient windows are insulated with a 100% polymer structural foam.

Other Technologies

Additional window technologies can provide even more comfort and savings. For example, multiple-paned windows can increase the percentage of UV rays that are blocked – this not only keeps your home comfortable but also protects your floors and fabrics from fading.  And the space between the panes can also be filled with a gas such as argon to further reduce heat transfer and increase energy efficiency.
