Tips For Gardening in a Wet Climate

Columbia Builders Gardening in a Wet Climate

When you’re gardening in a wet climate, you’ll quickly discover that excess rainwater can wreak havoc on your plants.

It has been a very wet winter season this year, and this much rain can really wreak havoc on an unprepared garden. Overwatered plants are susceptible to rot and disease, and they can suffer from being too wet for too long. If you’ve found that your garden is struggling to stay healthy during this wet and chilly season, there are a few ways you can help it out and perk it up.

Focus on Drainage

In a wet climate, the most important thing to consider is making sure your garden has proper drainage. To achieve this, consider building raised garden beds for your plants. This can be a very effective way to allow rainwater to drain down into the soil so it doesn’t drown your plants or encourage rot and disease.

In addition to raised garden beds, make sure the soil you add to these will allow for good drainage. Soils like clay won’t allow water to drain effectively, which can cause a number of secondary problems that may spell disaster for your beautiful garden.

If you’re using planters, consider options such as window boxes and hanging planters that offer superior drainage.

Grow Vertical

When it’s wet, it’s important to keep your plants off of the ground. You can protect your plants and keep them healthy by growing vertically. Tie your plants up to stakes or trellises to keep them supported and out of the mud. Keeping your plants upright provides other benefits, such as saving space in your garden and preventing overcrowding.

Plant Smart

If you’re going to plant directly into your soil, you can plant smart for the best results. If you have an area where rainwater tends to collect, use this space for your extra-thirsty plants and set up a rain garden. This is an excellent way to utilize all of that extra water and stabilize your soil, as well as growing a beautiful garden that is happy with all of the extra moisture.
