Make the Most of National Preparedness Month

Columbia Builders National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, so it’s time to take a look at your emergency plans and supplies to make sure you’re ready.

September is National Preparedness Month, and it’s a good time to remember to practice emergency preparedness at home or wherever you happen to be. When you take some time to discuss and practice emergency preparedness, it can help you maintain your calm in dire situations and keep you safe during serious emergencies. Putting together a plan and a kit allows you to make more efficient use of your limited time when disaster strikes and you need to act fast to keep yourself and your family safe.

Make an Emergency Plan

An important thing you can do for your home and your family is create an emergency plan that everyone is aware of and can follow. Go over potential emergency scenarios, discuss evacuation routes, and plan for who will grab what (if time allows). Having a plan helps to avoid panic and maintain order during an emergency so that everyone can get to safety no matter what is happening around them.

Put Together an Emergency Kit

Having an emergency kit at the ready can make emergency preparedness a lot easier. In the event of an emergency, simply grab your kit and go. Items you should consider including in your emergency kit include:

  • A flashlight
  • Blankets & pillows
  • A first aid kit
  • Batteries
  • Portable phone charger
  • Non-perishable food
  • Bottled water

Pets

Pets are family too, and there are items you can add to your emergency kit for your animal companion.

  • Dry or canned food
  • Collapsible bowls
  • A collar or harness with ID tag
  • A leash
  • Medications
  • A selfie with your pet (in case you’re separated)

Car

An emergency can strike at any time, even when you’re on the road. It’s always a good idea to have an emergency preparedness kit in your car in case you become stranded and need some essentials. Some items to include are:

  • A flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Phone charging cable
  • Blankets
  • First aid kit
  • Non-perishable food
  • Bottled water
  • Jumper cables
