4 Tips To Help Keep Your Custom Home’s Wood Floors in Great Shape

Wood Floors

The wood floors in your custom home can have a long life if you take care of them properly!

Wood floors are a popular choice for homeowners, and it’s not hard to see why. They give your home a rich, luxurious look and are one of the many ways you can make a statement in your custom home design. Hardwood is also very easy to clean and keep in good condition, and taking care of your flooring will ensure that it serves you well now and in the future. Here are four of our top tips to help you keep the wood floors in your custom home well-maintained.

1. Daily Practices to Care for Your Wood Floors

Doing a few things every day will help you protect and get the most out of your wood floors.  Consider removing your shoes when coming indoors from the outside – this practice is becoming common among homeowners and their guests. Place any furniture, especially in your living room, on pads to protect against scratches. Also, be sure to sweep or vacuum your floors on a regular basis and immediately take care to clean up any spills that may happen.

2. Dry Mop Once a Week

Dust, dirt, animal hair, and other debris will rest on your wood floor. Dust and wipe down your wood floors once a week – electrostatic cloths will yield the best results!

3. Monthly Cleaning

You should plan a thorough cleaning of your hardwood floors once a month. Use a hardwood cleaning product and follow the directions on the bottle carefully. Don’t leave too much of either the cleaner or standing water on the floor because this can permanently damage your wood floors. Use a sponge or mop to wipe away and rinse the floor as needed.

4. Remove Scuffs and Marks as They Happen

Unfortunately, scuffs and marks will appear on your wood floors from time to time. Here are some options for removing them:

  • Pencil Eraser: For small scuffs, using a regular pencil eraser is an effective, easy way to remove them.
  • Scuff Eraser: Found at many hardware stores, this item is good for larger scuffs or marks.
  • Acetone: Meant for tougher jobs, but be careful as this can dry out the surface of the wood. Make sure to follow up with an oil-based solvent in order to restore the beauty of that area of your wood floor.
