The Basics of Wood Trim for Home Interiors

Wood Trim

Wood trim adds a distinctive stylistic element to a room (just like the wood trim ringing the perimeter of these windows).

When building their dream home, most homeowners tend to focus on the big decisions – such as home design, room sizes, cabinetry, and flooring. However, consideration should also be given to the aesthetics of their home’s interior. Paint colors, furnishings, decor, and other details can dramatically alter the look and feel of individual spaces. Many homeowners don’t realize how influential the right wood trim can be in perfecting a given room in their home. Wood trim adds a clean design accent – along with warmth, sophistication or just an eye-catching detail –  to an otherwise plain wall.

At Columbia Builders, we offer a variety of standard and optional moldings and trim, so our homeowners will have just the right look for their home! Our sales consultant will assist you in selecting the various options of trim features we offer. Here are some of the types of wood trim that are common in homes.

Baseboard

Baseboard is a common type of wood trim, found where the floor and wall meet.   This trim can range in size, but is most often found in 2 ¼” and 4 ¼” widths.  Milled in a variety of styles from simple to ornate, it’s easy to find a trim that coordinates with your décor.

Door/Window Casing

Casing defines and seals the perimeter of a window or door frame. This wood trim is essential for giving a room a refined, finished look.

Crown Molding

This type of wood trim is found where ceilings and walls intersect and provides a seamless transition from one surface to the other.   Crown molding creates a clean line at the upper seams of a room, and also adds interest and depth.

Chair Rail

Chair rail was originally designed to protect walls from the damage caused by the backs of chairs. Nowadays, however, this type of wood trim (usually found about 36 inches above the floor) is used to accent a room or create a break for two-tone painted space or wallpaper.

Wainscoting

Installed underneath chair rail molding, wainscoting is the name for wood paneling which is installed against a wall. The various styles of wainscoting can complement any design aesthetic, from a refined look to a more rustic feel that creates warmth to your room.
