Tips on Setting Up a Home Gym

There are some tips and tricks we can share with you to help you design the best home gym for your custom home.

At the start of the new year, many of us are getting started on our yearly fitness goals in order to live a more comfortable and healthier lifestyle. One of the ways to do this is to set up a home gym so you can have access to important exercise equipment at all times. This allows you to work out as much as you need to without ever leaving your home, offering the ultimate in convenience and a tailored exercise experience right in your own home.

Walls & Flooring

When you decide to design a home gym, the first step after choosing the room is determining what kind of flooring to install and what paint to use for the walls. For flooring, the best options will be flooring that is highly durable and easy to clean. You can add floor mats in critical areas to minimize damage and keep sweat off of the bare floor.

For wall and floor color, this can be a good time to get creative. While you can go with standard or neutral colors such as eggshell wall paint and natural concrete floor, you can also design the space to be more dramatic and interesting with dark or vibrant colors. You can also use your equipment as inspiration to create a cohesive space where everything looks like it belongs.

Equipment

When you’re planning to set up a home gym, it’s not recommended that you just toss in a bunch of random gym equipment and call it good. Once you’ve chosen the space where the gym will be located, you need to determine what equipment you will be adding to the space. This is important because you will need to make sure that everything you add will fit in the space while still leaving room for movement. A home gym that isn’t well-planned will be suffocating and feel chaotic, making it difficult for those using it to focus and enjoy their workout.

Airflow

Many people end up putting their home gym in an area of their house that is out of the way, such as a basement. This isn’t a bad idea, but if your gym can be placed somewhere that can get good airflow, this is ideal. Having windows or french doors in your home gym will allow you to let in fresh air and maintain a comfortable and relaxing space.

Lighting

With lighting, you can get creative and use it as another way to decorate the space. Be smart about your lighting options, use a dimmer to keep it at a comfortable brightness, and think carefully about the placement. When you lie down on a mat to do crunches, you don’t want to be staring into a bright light.

Storage

Storage and utility are easy to overlook when designing your home gym, but they’re critical components for a fully-functioning space. Storage needs to be available for the various smaller items that are often found in a home gym, such as dumbbells, resistance bands, jump ropes, etc. In addition, it can be a good idea to incorporate a small refrigerator to keep water bottles cool, or at least a small countertop with cabinetry and a sink where you can keep your reusable water bottles and refill them when needed.
