Online Resources Available During Social Distancing

Check out these resources to keep yourselves entertained or to supplement distance learning.

With all the time we’ve spent in our homes the past few weeks social distancing, it’s increasingly difficult to find ways to occupy ourselves and our families. While many have taken on new hobbies or finally found the time to do needed house and yard work, we can all benefit from additional ways to spend an afternoon with everyone’s favorite modern-day tool: the Internet! Several organizations have made plenty of media and content available to the public at low or no cost in order to keep us connected online during this time of change. Check out these resources to keep yourselves entertained or to supplement distance learning.

Something to Watch

If you somehow run out of things to watch on Netflix, there are enough videos for a lifetime available through other avenues. For animal-lovers of all ages, many zoos and aquariums around the nation are live-streaming their inhabitants. This Fatherly article compiled links to live streams that are fun to check-out. Of course, the National Aquarium, located in Baltimore, is streaming their aquatic exhibits for all to enjoy as well.

If you’re looking for an extensive collection of documentaries and films for free, you can access thousands of titles on Kanopy. All you need to do is register for an account with your public library card (for college students, also available through their university).

Ever wanted to visit the theatre? Get a taste of it through a virtual experience! Check out The National Theatre’s productions made available on YouTube.

Something to Read

Have you exhausted all the reading material in your personal collection? Now would have been a great time to have access to the library for books and magazines. However, public libraries are closed during this time. Fortunately, you can still borrow e-books, audiobooks, e-magazines, and movies through your library system’s website. Visit your local library’s website to obtain more information on how to access the content and find even more valuable resources.

Something to Help with Distance Learning

For parents who have found themselves taking on a teaching role during their local school system’s distance learning initiatives, we have useful free resources to share. This extensive compilation from The Journal should have something for every parent to use. Plus, students from all grade levels, even college students, can make use of these amazing tools.
