Addressing Summer Learning Loss with Fun Activities

Combat summer learning loss by using fun activities to keep your child’s mind engaged.

It’s summer break for our children and that means fun in the sun! However, it can also mean summer learning loss, also known as summer slide. When learning, it is important to stay engaged with the lessons being taught or there is a risk of regression—forgetting what was learned. This happens to children over summer break, putting them in a precarious spot at the start of the next school year. Thankfully, there are lots of great activities that are fun while also being educational.

Spend a Day at the Zoo

A day at the zoo can be a great time for the whole family, and it can also be a great chance for education that everyone can get in on. Use the helpful plaques posted at the zoo exhibits to teach your child trivia about the animals they’re seeing. This will be especially useful for animals they have taken a vested interest in. If they’re really interested in that specific creature, they’ll be more willing to learn about it. Some facts might be new to you too, and the whole family can enjoy learning something new about a cool animal.

Play a Board Game

Unplug your kid and play a family-friendly board game with them. Board games teach children patience, and sportsmanship, while also being useful for teaching math and reading skills. This is a great way to spend a fun night in with your child and enjoy some family time and socialization. Your child likely won’t even notice they’re learning, they’ll just enjoy the activity and the family time.

Plant a Garden

Get your child outdoors in the sunshine and plant a garden. Sneak some science lessons in there about photosynthesis, soil, water, and the sun. Like board games, gardening is also a great way to teach children patience. Once they see their garden bloom, they’ll be proud of their accomplishment and appreciate the time and work it can take for a successful result.

Keep it Balanced

Don’t forget to just have fun sometimes. It’s important to lace some of your summer fun with education to keep your child’s mind engaged, but everyone benefits from some mindless entertainment. Going out to the amusement park or water park, bike riding, or visiting an arcade can be a great break for everyone.
