Smart Upgrades for a New Home

When building a new home, some upgrades are best taken care of now rather than later. Learn which ones below!

You’ve found the perfect location, a home design you love, and the right builder – Columbia Builders! Now that you’re ready to begin the process of building your new custom home, chances are you’ve been dreaming, researching, and planning for quite some time. And although you’ll find that Columbia Builders includes a wide variety of features, there will be custom and optional items that you’ll likely consider. Most folks have two lists they work from – their “must haves” and their “wish list.” What’s important to recognize is that some features are best incorporated into your new home during construction. It may be tempting to do-it-yourself or hire the job out later, but often it is less expensive and a lot less hassle to complete those items now. Below are a few examples that we discuss with our clients.

Windows

Prior to your home’s construction is the time to add windows, especially in an unfinished basement. Although you may elect to finish your basement after you’ve moved in, you’ll want to make sure that you have all the windows in place. If the site you choose allows for a walk-out basement, adding full-sized windows will ensure you’ll have all the light you need in the future.

Stairs

If hardwood stairs are an important feature in your home, it is an item that should be added during a home’s original construction. It might be possible to add hardwood flooring to your home after construction – however, replacing a staircase is a much more involved job and an expensive one.

Lighting

Light fixtures can be fairly inexpensive, but wiring your home is not. During the selections process, be sure your home is outfitted for the lighting you need now, and in the future. Fixtures and electrical pre-wires – for overhead lighting, wall sconces, and ceiling fans – are easily installed before the walls of your new home are closed up.

Baths

Changing a minor component of your bathroom down the line may not be too challenging, but replacing any sort of major component certainly is. Is a spa-like shower or jetted tub very important to you? Now is the time to splurge on these luxury items.

Technology

Smart home technology is increasingly requested in our new custom homes, and this trend will surely not diminish in the coming years. Because technology is reliant on built-in wiring, connections, and various plugs and ports, make sure the proper infrastructure is in place during construction.
